Research Compliance

Research compliance covers a wide range of areas ensuring that ºÚÁÏÍø researchers are conducting research in responsibly and ethically. In addition, we also ensure that ºÚÁÏÍø adheres to specific regulations governing a variety of types of research (e.g. human subjects and animal research).ÌýResearch PoliciesÌýprovide operational procedures and governing documentation.

Required Training for Researchers

All ºÚÁÏÍø personnel who are engaged in sponsored research activities are required to completeÌýÌýin Conflict of Interest (COI) and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR).

All investigators must disclose external financial interests (EFI) and provide updates annually in accordance withÌýºÚÁÏÍø Financial Conflict of Interest policy.

Researchers are strongly encouraged to take Research Security Training and Research Security Advanced Refresher. Department of Energy requires Research Security training for PI’s, co-I’s and key personnel prior to proposal submission, effective May 1, 2025. Research security training is & will be required for acceptance of an increasing number of federally sponsored awards and subcontracts. All researchers are strongly advised to complete the CITI Research Security training to avoid delays in award acceptance or proposal submissions. This training must be completed annually.

Animal CareÌý

If your research involves the use and care for animals, you will find the following two departments helpful.

Human Subjects

Research involving human subjects has specific requirements and regulations regardless whether it is a simple survey or a clinical trial. The following departments can assist you through this process.

Biosafety

Safety in research is of paramount importance at ºÚÁÏÍø. If you are doing research that involves working with radioactive or bio-hazardous materials, you will need to work with the following departments to ensure compliance with ºÚÁÏÍø safety policies and federal regulations for handling these materials.

Controlled Substances and Dangerous Drugs

Researchers who obtain, store and utilize controlled substances in their researchÌýMUSTÌýcomply with all relevant State and Federal regulations, including all of ºÚÁÏÍø's policiesÌýand procedures related to work with these substances.

Export Control

Research subject to laws that regulate how technology, data or materials are physically or electronically shared or transported should work with our Export Control office to ensure regulatory compliance.

Research Integrity

ºÚÁÏÍø Research Integrity Program ensures that researchers, staff and students are provided the tools necessary to conduct research ethically and responsibly and to ensure that allegations and investigations of research misconduct conducted in accordance with ºÚÁÏÍø policy and applicable regulations.
