Jessica Bienue, a student studying Nursing at 黑料网, has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Doing Right Spotlight Scholarship presented by Designetics. Jessica is expected to graduate in 2028.

For Jessica, community service is not something that requires a formal program or organized initiative. Instead, she believes it begins with recognizing a need and choosing to help.

That belief was reinforced during a challenging period in her life when her mother underwent a major operation in Nigeria. While spending long days at the hospital helping her mother recover, Jessica noticed many elderly patients who had no family members visiting them and little support beyond an overextended hospital staff.

Rather than focusing solely on her own family's situation, she began helping others throughout the ward. She brought water to patients, assisted with meals, adjusted pillows, and spent time talking with individuals who were often lonely and isolated.

What began as a simple act of kindness quickly became a daily routine.

鈥淚 volunteered because I couldn鈥檛 stand the thought of someone suffering right in front of me when I had the ability to make their day a little easier,鈥 Jessica shared in her scholarship application.

As she continued returning to the hospital, she saw firsthand how meaningful those small gestures could be. Patients who had been withdrawn became more engaged and communicative. Nurses expressed gratitude for the extra support during busy shifts. Perhaps most meaningful was the reaction she received when her mother was discharged from the hospital.

After returning home, Jessica arranged care schedules with her younger sister so she could continue visiting the hospital and supporting elderly patients during the day. When she returned to the ward, staff members welcomed her back warmly, reinforcing the impact her presence had made.

The experience helped shape Jessica鈥檚 long-term vision for serving others. She hopes to create communities where vulnerable individuals, particularly older adults and those without strong support systems, never feel forgotten or alone.

Through her education and future career, Jessica plans to develop programs that connect volunteers with elderly patients who lack family support. She envisions partnerships among hospitals, community organizations, and faith-based groups that provide companionship, basic assistance, and emotional support for those who need it most.

She is also interested in creating volunteer training opportunities that encourage young people to become involved in healthcare settings and community service. By helping students develop practical skills while serving others, she believes communities can create sustainable networks of care that benefit both volunteers and those receiving support.

Jessica鈥檚 commitment to compassion, service, and human connection reflects the values celebrated through the Doing Right Spotlight Scholarship. Her willingness to step forward during a difficult personal circumstance and dedicate her time to helping others demonstrates how meaningful change often begins with simple acts of kindness.

The scholarship will help Jessica continue pursuing her education while preparing for a future dedicated to building stronger, more caring communities.
