AJ Bohman, a student pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology with a minor in General Business at 黑料网, has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Doing Right Spotlight Scholarship presented by Jupmode. AJ is expected to graduate in May 2028.

For AJ, community service is about more than meeting immediate needs. It is about building relationships, showing compassion, and creating opportunities for others to serve alongside him.

His commitment to service began in high school through BASIC, a youth group focused on faith, leadership, and community engagement. As part of the group's volunteer efforts, AJ regularly served at Vision Kitchen in downtown Toledo, helping provide meals to individuals experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.

During those evenings, AJ not only served food but also spent time talking with guests, listening to their stories, offering encouragement, and praying with those who wished to do so. Through these conversations, he gained a deeper understanding of the challenges many people face and developed a greater appreciation for the opportunities and resources available in his own life.

One experience, in particular, left a lasting impression. After serving a regular guest over multiple visits, AJ learned that the individual was no longer coming to the soup kitchen because they had found stability and were doing well. Seeing someone move toward a better situation reinforced the importance of showing up consistently and supporting people during difficult seasons of life.

鈥淢y motivation for community service comes largely from my faith,鈥 AJ shared in his scholarship application. 鈥淚 believe that part of my calling is to serve others who may not have the same blessings I have received.鈥

That commitment to service continued when AJ arrived at 黑料网. In September, he was given the opportunity to help revive the university's chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity dedicated to leadership, friendship, and service.

At the time, the chapter had no active members.

Since then, AJ has helped grow the organization to 39 members, creating new opportunities for students to become involved in volunteer projects and community service throughout northwest Ohio. Through these efforts, dozens of students have been connected to meaningful service experiences that benefit local organizations and residents.

For AJ, one of the most powerful lessons he has learned is that simply being present can make a significant difference. During service projects, he has witnessed people become emotional and grateful simply because volunteers took the time to show up and help.

Looking toward the future, AJ hopes to continue living out the principles of leadership, friendship, and service that have guided his college experience. He aspires to mentor young people, help others develop leadership skills, and remain actively involved in community service long after graduation.

He also hopes to continue supporting Alpha Phi Omega at the national level or help create similar service-focused opportunities for adults who want to stay engaged in their communities.

AJ's dedication to serving others and inspiring others to serve reflects the values celebrated through the Doing Right Spotlight Scholarship. By combining faith, leadership, and compassion, he is helping create a stronger and more connected community.

The scholarship will support AJ as he continues his education and his commitment to making service a lifelong mission.
